Jocelyn K. Allen, Summit speaker on Culturally Conscious Leadership, left a successful career in corporate communications to become an entrepreneur in 2015. She joined forces with Chandra S. Lewis to form The Allen Lewis Agency, a full-service transformational agency committed to helping clients tell their stories, build their brands, and commemorate experiences.
She answers a few questions about her career journey:
Q. What attracted you to the public relations field?
A. At my core, I’m a people person. Public relations is just that – relating to the public.
Q. What was the key turning point in your career?
A. I’ve had several turning points in my career – when I left the “security” of a “regular” job at WDIV to take a freelance position that led to a permanent career with GM; when I left the security of a great career at GM to start my entrepreneurial journey.
Q. Who has had the biggest influence on your career?
A. I’ve been fortunate to have a number of great mentors during my career, but the single biggest influence on my career and my life has been my mom. She’s taught me there are no limits.
Q. What is a major challenge you’ve faced in your career?
A. Negative self-talk; believing I couldn’t handle anything professionally that has come my way.
Q. What two goals have you set for yourself as a leader?
A. My goals are to:
- Empower my team to be their best selves.
- Find balance in all that I do.
Q. What is the best advice you’ve gotten?
A. Treat everyone the way you’d like to be treated.
