The Last 16 Days of Robert Beaupre’s Life
Pat Anstett responded to a call early in the pandemic from a former Detroit Free Press editor with a new job at Type Investigations. The national non-profit organization works with national media on major investigative pieces and was gathering a team of reporters to describe the impact of the pandemic on Michigan. While reporting this bigger story, a Facebook post from the brother of a childhood friend described the loss of his good friend from COVID-19.
“I messaged him and he arranged an interview with his friend’s wife. During a 2-½ hour interview, she explained that she couldn’t visit her husband till his final hours so text messages had to suffice; with hospital workers intervening. I asked if she might share the texts, which made the story. The editor found it to be so compelling, she offered it up to the Huffington Post before our team finished its project. The story really wrote itself, as we say. I am grateful to Robert Beaupre’s wife for trusting me,” says Anstett.
At the time, hospitals were telling families and staff not to talk to the media so the story was one of the early ones to put a face on a person who died of COVID. The Huffington Post, a partner with Type Investigations, used the story for several weeks to anchor its COVID coverage. Pat went on to become the lead reporter for the team’s story, using the contacts made and the experience gained as medical writer for 22 years for the Detroit Free Press to help write both stories.
Congratulations to our AWC Detroit winners!!
