When you think of news media, there are likely a few common phrases that come to mind: breaking news, trending stories, broadcast journalism, or maybe even morning news. Reporters are undoubtedly covering critical and timely issues each day but, for local newscasters like Ameera David, their roles hold far more meaning. These journalists are telling stories of strong and determined communities, following inspiring individuals or groups as they work to make an impact, and shining a light in the darkest of places when people are facing challenges.

David has a deep connection to the city and people of Detroit. She was born and raised on the city’s east side, attending Detroit Public Schools and celebrating the metropolitan area’s tremendous Arab American community. David’s family relocated to Northville when she was in high school, but the spirit of Detroit stayed with her.

She went on to cover issues directly affecting fellow Arab Americans through weekly columns and “Arab Detroit,” a Detroit Public Television special she co-hosted. Next, David’s career took her to Washington D.C. where she spent time with NBC News and hosted the daily financial news show “Boom Bust” at RT America. In 2016, David was awarded the Bronze World Medal for her incredible works as a news anchor at the New York Festivals, a program honoring the best TV and film work across the globe.

Now, David is a weekend evening anchor and weekday reporter at WXYZ Detroit. Most notably, she is leading the coverage of the devastating financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic on Metro Detroit residents and sharing valuable resources through The Rebound Detroit. This initiative aims to help those struggling to find work, make ends meet, stay safe, and manage the emotional toll the year has taken on each of us.

David is a proud Wolverine, earning her bachelor of arts degree in political science from the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor. She continued her journalism education in New York at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.

Congratulations to Ameera on her Media Room Spotlight recognition!
