What does it take to build a prosperous career? Most people would agree that determination and hard work are key traits, but loving what you do is just as vital. Chanel Stitt has found her true calling and already seen incredible success in the early stages of her journalism career.

A recent graduate of the University of Michigan-Dearborn (UM-Dearborn), Stitt has a lengthy list of experience under her belt including time with WDIV Local 4 News, Issue Media Group, Mlive.com and The Michigan Journal. She is currently a business reporter for the Detroit Free Press, highlighting Metro Detroit’s growing community of minority businesses, nonprofit organizations and entrepreneurs.

So, what is her secret to success? Well, she credits networking for helping her learn more about the industry.

“I had a desire to meet the people behind the words to every article, and to meet the people that were on camera or hosting radio shows,” Stitt explained. “I was able to do that through the National Association of Black Journalists, along with many other networking opportunities throughout college.”

However, networking may be an understatement for the connections and relationships Stitt has established. She serves as the Vice President of Print for the Detroit Chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists, and was a member of both the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated and Public Relations Student Society of America while working toward her degree. Additionally, Stitt has received several honors from the UM-Dearborn including:

  • Intern of the Year in 2018
  • Emerging Leader in 2018
  • Difference Maker in 2019
  • Distinguished Student Leader in 2020

Stitt is a strong proponent for sharing experiences and information with others to help them learn the ins and outs of the industry. “People have spent, and still spend, a lot of time giving me advice and I always write it all down so I can start taking action as soon as possible.”

When asked what advice she has for young women like her pursuing a career in journalism, Stitt shared these sentiments: “I recommend that you find the topics and jobs you’re passionate about and chase your dream.  I believe that networking and constant reading and writing will take you where you want to go. It’s also important to share what you know with others as you learn what works and what doesn’t work well in the industry.”

Congratulations to Chanel Stitt on her Media Room Spotlight nomination!
